Ecology & Environment

Rosewyn is mentioned in the Heritage England Records as a medieval settlement in 1302.  The buildings are shown on the earliest map of the area in 1699.  It is believed that the main house dates back to around 1615.  The main roof timbers are thought to be original and bear the carpenters marks.

During your stay at Rosewyn you can enjoy the natural environment around you, enjoying the incredible views over the rural Cornish countryside and emmersing yourself in nature by taking a walk around our field which we often leave for the grass to grow. Here you’ll find pheasants, many song birds, buzzards, kestrels and you may even spot a deer or squirrels.

Set in 5 areas of Cornish rural landscape the owner, Colin has been a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society for nearly 40 years, specialising in geomorphology, has undertaken various projects to promote the ecology and environment at Rosewyn which include:

 - Rewilding the 4 acre field to create habitat and prevent soil erosion
 - Planting over 100 endangered British hardwood trees
 - Constantly maintaining and improving trees
 - Growing oak trees from fallen acorns, for future generations to enjoy
 - Planting an orchard of rare Cornish cider and eating apples
 - Producing apple juice and cider from the crop of our own apples
 - Building and installing a Barn Owl box
 - Creating a walk around the field
 - Using a polytunnel and allotment for growing vegetables
 - Installing two 4kW solar panel arrays
 - Installing an EV charger
 - Installing battery storage for solar power
 - Installing a borehole for the supply of fresh water from 65 metres below ground level
 - Line drying linen when possible

Rosewyn benefits from many species who live here as well as the owners and visitors:

 - Deer
 - Squirrels
 - Numerous songbirds
 - Magpies and Pigeons
 - Buzzards and occasionally Kestrels
 - And a magnificent Barn Owl who calls in from time to time.

And most of all: You can see the sunrise and sunset and because of the dark skies: the Milky Way and shooting stars.
