Return of the Snowdrops!
The Snowdrops have started to grow at Rosewyn! A reminder that the days are getting longer and brighter, and Spring will eventually be here!
Here are a few facts about Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis):
🌱 They are also known as the flower of hope, due to them being a sign of the end of winter.
🌱 Snowdrops are not actually native to the UK. The exact location is unknown, but they are said to be originally from somewhere in Mainland Europe.
🌱 They were originally grown as an ornamental, with records of them being grown in the UK going back to the 16th Century. It was not until the late 18th Century that Snowdrops started to grow in the wild.
🌱 Sightings of Snowdrops usually start between January and February, but December sightings are becoming more common.
🌱 Due to them flowering during winter, they do not need to rely on pollinators, they use bulb division to spread instead.
🌱 During the Second World War, people in the UK nicknamed American soldiers Snowdrops as they wore a green uniform with white caps/helmets.
